Carman & Kurt’s wedding – The black & white collection

In a time where colour dictates trends, why would you opt to remove it? So there I was, pondering whether or not the couple would complain if I only told them after the fact, that I shot their entire wedding in black and white.   I’m sure they would NOT like the idea, but then after I told them that there’s no turning back, they’d have no choice but to accept it and ask to see the end result….then sue me. So let’s imagine I did it. Imagine I shot this entire wedding in black and white taking us all back to 1964. It’s an era filled with chandeliers, wall paper, mirrors with amazingly detailed frames. Carman and Kurt are getting married and they made the worst mistake in the world by choosing a crazy photographer who wanted to know what it would feel like if everything was void of colour.

I would also like to give a special thanks to Chocolat Cafe & Decor for your warm hospitality and for making this shoot possible.
Also thank you to Maggs Hoosain, for an excellent job with the lighting  – Legend…wait for it….dary – LEGENDARY!
Carman & Kurt – Don’t worry, I have all your photo’s in colour for you as well;-)

Gillian & Bevan – Zevenwacht Wine Estate

I’m sitting here trying to think of words to string together to explain how awesome it was to shoot this wedding. Where do I even begin? First off, Bevan and Gillian were a total pleasure to work with. Their friends had me cracking up at jokes that at times I struggled to take a picture. I had real fun and I loved every moment of it. Gillian seemed to be posing for the cover of Vogue, and she made it seem so effortless(I’m convinced she was practicing at home in the mirror). This was the perfect couple and they did a stunning job at pulling off an unforgettable wedding. This one is going down as one of the best!

Tommy & Kirsty’s wedding – Forest 44 Stellenbosch

King Tommy + Queen Kirsty + Forrest 44 = AWESOME WEDDING! Why King & Queen? We’ll, as Kirsty put it, because they were raised by royalty(paying great respect to their parents). I could see family and friends were very important in the lives of Tommy & Kirsty and with it being the celebration of their wedding day, it was also the celebration of the people who were closest to their hearts. One thing that Tommy made certain he did(which wedding couples hardly ever think of) was to set a timer so that every 40 minutes they would be reminded to take in the special day, to actually pause, look around and be greatfull for all their blessings. Your wedding day goes by so quickly, you do so much planning and coordinating that when the day actually draws closer you just want it to be over with. This wedding made me realize that we can so easily be distracted by life’s daily routines, but by reminding ourselves to take in the moments will make for a lifetime of good memories.

Special thanks to Chloe Thomas for assisting me on the day:-)

Ruth-Candice & Gordon – Rusticana Paarl

Scorching hot with a slight breeze, really? Slight breeze? I never felt a slight breeze Mr Weatherman. Who’s complaining thought(me? Never!). The weather was perfect for a wedding! Ruth-Candice and Gordon had a very spontaneous wedding shoot. On route to the wedding reception they decided that they would love to have some photo’s taken at the car museum. Car museum? Really?!!? I loved the idea, it was different and it allowed me to be creative and get some shots not typical of a traditional wedding. I loved every minute of it. Special thanks to Jamie(you know why). Here are a few pics:-)

Charne & Neil’s wedding

Okay turn your shoulders…a tiny bit more, yes that’s good. Now look off to your left, eyes towards me….small smile, LOVE IT! That’s stunning, okay take 2 steps back, yes – a tiny bit more, now put your left hand on your hip, ok push your one shoulder up, NICE. Look off to the side,  YES, that look….hold it……hold it, bigger smile! NICE! Good job, that’s great! “I would never be able to do this” Charne says. “What?” I ask. “Being told what to do”. “I’m being really nice about it though, am I not?” I say. Charne is a strong independent woman and I could fully understand why she wouldn’t be able to take directions like that all day, but even though I was posing her in all sorts of positions she was really a trooper. I can relate to the fact that 8 hours of smiling takes its toll on you, trust me, I know first hand, you DON’T want to see my wedding photo’s. Neil was as cool as could be. He actually just popped in from Harrysmith to get married and take his wife home. This is how he done it…

Lynette & Dayne’s Wedding – Koelenhof

I remember Lynette Jones (now Jansen) and I having email conversations for nearly a year before we actually met. It was good to finally meet the person behind the screen. If only her surname could have stayed Jones, then MRS! MRS! JONES!!! ..could have been her wedding song. I’m actually quite excited to post these pictures, more than usual. I enjoyed editing them and still have loads to do, so this is just a preview….

*Special thanks to Edward Duckitt for assisting me on the day, you ROCK!

Portfolio shoot with Lancia

I enjoy shooting at odd locations, sometimes weird ones. The photoshoot for Lancia was originally scheduled to be shot at a deserted warehouse. It was extremely secluded and quite risky entering the area without protection. I arranged with the local police to keep watch during the 4 hours I planned to be there; I wasn’t going to take any chances. On the day of the shoot the owner informed me that I cannot use his property. I had a dilemma and 7 people counting on me to make this shoot happen. I decided to call in a favour and found this little gem of a broken down messed up concrete structure with the help of my friend Edward. It’s half built, half huh? I loved it! This shoot was done with the assistance of my “dream team”.  Check out the behind the scenes pic’s right at the bottom.

Darcelle – Motivational speaker

I occasionally do portfolio shoots where a certain look is needed by the client for business purposes. In this case the client was a very close friend of mine who needed a stylish and sophisticated shoot for a brochure entailing her accomplishments as a motivational speaker.  Crystal Towers in Century City Cape Town made for the perfect location. Darcelle and I both started our “passion projects” round about the same time and we’ve always encouraged each other to be the best that we can be, to push the boundaries of what we’ve been given and to inspire others to do the same. Darcelle  has been booked for talks all over the world, recently returning from Europe, and continues to inspire me to exceed my wildest expectations. If I could sum these pictures up into one sentence it would be that true confidence speaks volumes, without saying a word.

*UPDATE: Darcelle Schouw is officially a nominee for South African business woman of the year.

Stacey Smith - Loving the red dress and the natural poses!

Jason - Definitively stylish! Excellent location choice. I can easily see the pic of Darcelle on the chair printed in a magazine.

Simon & Nicole’s wedding -Webersburg Stellenbosch

Aaaaa, Webersberg. Such a beautiful place! I feel lucky everytime I get to shoot at this stunning venue. Once again, along side Jean Pierre Uys, I was privileged to capture a stunning wedding. Everything was just so well orchestrated and phenomenally put together that if I had given my camera to my 73 year old mother she would have struggled to get a bad shot. Actually she might have been able to take much better shots than me seeing that she was the one who guided me to this path of capturing still images. Anyway, enough about my mother; Webersburg is filled with history and interesting ornaments so you may notice one or two random antique’s just lying around, which gives you the impression that this place had been around for quite a while and is definitively one of Stellenbosch’s prime wedding destinations. The couple: AWESOME, the venue: BREATHTAKING and the pictures…..I think it came out okay;-)Check out the picture of the DJ who uses a telephone handset as his earphones.

Damian & Lorraine’s wedding – Webersburg

Occasionally I get the privileged to shoot with, in my view, the best photographer in S.A; Jean Pierre Uys. This was one of those occasions and it all took place at Webersburg in Stellenbosch and had guests fly in from all over the world to witness Damian and Lorraine get married at one of the most picturesque venues Cape Town has to offer. As a Cape Town wedding photographer I often get the chance to shoot at this location and every single time the pictures look different, Webersburg just has soooooo much to offer. You owe it to yourself to check it out. The wedding was co-ordinated by Wedding Concepts, here are just a few snaps;-)

Lee-Ann & Bernito’s wedding – Bloemendal

They say real men cry. The person who first made this statement must have been a man, it simply justifies the fact that we men are all soft and squishy inside, we just don’t like showing it. Bernito was a real man on his wedding day, tears of joy I call it. Lee-Ann surprised Bernito with a song especially dedicated to him at the ceremony and sang like an angel. The rest of the day turned out just heavenly. Enough said, here are a few pics…
